Program Overview

Make a difference in lives of all ages with Palm Beach State College's Associate in Science (A.S.) in Human Services. This immersive degree blends classroom instruction with fieldwork experiences to prepare students for careers in assessing, facilitating and coordinating services for individuals with behavioral, educational or socio-emotional needs. 

This degree offers specialized concentrations designed to enhance the skills of individuals already working in human services or preparing to enter the field. Graduates are well-equipped for roles in support and treatment settings. Students choose from three concentration areas:

  • Addiction Studies (Code: 2391): Explore interventions and treatments to help people recover from addictions. Course content includes awareness of the history of addiction, treatment modalities and therapeutic interventions.
  • General (Code: AS 2345): Learn the broad scope of human services, gaining critical skills in interviewing, case management and group dynamics. You'll develop the expertise to work with various populations. 
  • Youth Development (Code: AS 2374): Specialize in youth development needs, with emphasis on group dynamics, youth programming and behavioral and educational management.

Career Outlook

Graduates in addiction studies can pursue careers as human services specialists or behavioral health technicians. The General concentration prepares students for positions in social service, government and community agencies, as well as rehabilitation facilities and group homes. It provides a broad foundation for roles such as outreach workers and mental health technicians. Those specializing in youth development may begin as youth afterschool program assistants, family support workers or in similar youth-focused roles.
