Program Overview

Palm Beach State College’s Associate in Science (A.S.) in Diagnostic Medical Sonography prepares students for entry-level practice as sonographers. Students learn to use high-frequency sound waves to create images that help physicians evaluate and diagnose a variety of medical conditions.

The program combines classroom instruction, lab practice and clinical education to help students develop technical expertise in the field. You'll build knowledge and skills in sonographic anatomy, imaging techniques, patient care and communication, image evaluation and the decision-making needed to obtain diagnostic images. Clinical rotations allow students to apply these skills in patient care settings while gaining experience under supervision. 

Graduates are prepared to pursue professional certification exams and enter the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Students may also continue their education through the College’s Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging.

    • Cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher 
    • Completion of prerequisite courses listed in Course Catalog
  • Location: Online and on-site at Palm Beach Gardens campus and local hospitals

After completing your A.S. in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, you can:

  • Transfer credits seamlessly to PBSC's Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging, with concentrations in adult echocardiography and leadership.
  • Pursue bachelor's degrees at other institutions in medical imaging majors.
  • Take ARDMS Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer® (RDMS®) exams. Students can also pursue American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) credentials in sonography.

This peer review organization is nationally accepted for setting standards for education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Professional Certification
Graduates from this accredited program are eligible to take national board exams administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). This organization is accepted as a credentialing agency for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the United States.

Only graduates of CAAHEP-accredited programs are eligible to take the national board exams administered by ARDMS 60 days before graduation. Most employers require this professional certification.
