College Readiness Program

Palm Beach State College provides a complete College Readiness Program for students who need to build academic skills for success. We welcome students entering from high school as well as students who are starting or resuming their college careers later in life.

Our advisors assist students with course selection and educational planning. Our college readiness courses prepare students for college-level courses in reading, English and mathematics. They include:

  • Developmental reading and writing
  • Developmental algebra
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
  • Introduction to the College Experience
  • Personal development

College Readiness Program participants Ada Hernandez and Miguel Gomez graduated with their Associate in Arts degrees.

Am I eligible?

Any U.S. certificate or associate degree-seeking student may enroll in College Readiness classes; however, they are designed particularly for students who need additional skills. International students should check their eligibility with the Office of International Education

State law prohibits baccalaureate students from enrolling in college readiness courses. Academic advisors work with these students to design college readiness plans to prepare for college-level work.

How do I apply?

Please apply to become a Palm Beach State College student. If you need assistance with your application, please reach out to an admissions advisor

After your application has been accepted and you complete your New Student Orientation session, you can register for college readiness courses.

Student Success Tip

Once you complete your college readiness courses, you may take PBSC's required courses in English and mathematics as soon as possible to apply your new skills to college-level courses!

College Readiness Courses

The College Readiness Program is tailored to each student’s needs. More information about the program's readiness areas is available in the course catalog.

English Courses

The College Readiness Program offers a range of English courses for students with different levels of language skills.

  • Primary English language students: We provide instruction in more advanced skills needed to progress to ENC 1101 College Composition and other college-level courses.
  • Students with limited English proficiency: We offer English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
    • Students are placed in courses based on their scores on the Accuplacer ESL - English as a Secondary Language test.
    • We offer three levels of courses that address reading, grammar, speaking and listening skills. We combine lecture and lab components to meet the specific needs of non-native English speakers.
    • Academic support is provided in person and online through tutoring and audio and video technology. Students may also use interactive computer software in the Student Learning Center on each campus.
