Palm Beach State College Board Policy
Title: Paid Parental Leave
Policy Number: 6Hx-18-5.132
Legal Authority: 1001.64 FS, 1001.65 FS
Date Adopted/Amended: Adopted 4/12/2022
A non-bargaining unit employee in a regular or fixed-term position may be granted Paid Parental Leave for a period of up to ten consecutive working days within the first eight weeks immediately following the birth of an employee’s child or placement of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care in their home. Adoption of a spouse’s child is excluded from this policy. A multiple birth, adoption, or placement (i.e., birth of twins or placement/adoption of siblings) does not increase the total amount of paid parental leave.
Employees are eligible if they have been continuously employed in a regular or fixed-term position for nine calendar months and have worked a minimum of 720 hours immediately preceding the birth, adoption, or placement. Temporary employees, student workers, and interns are not eligible.
Leave payments will be based on the following for each requested day:
- Full-time employees in a 40 hour per week budgeted position will be paid 8 hours per day
- Full-time employees in a 35 hour per week budgeted position will be paid 7 hours per day
- Part-time employees in a 20 or greater per week budgeted position will be paid 5 hours per day
Paid Parental Leave must be taken in one continuous period and is not extended by winter break, or spring break. However, holidays will not count as part of paid parental leave and may extend the continuous period. An employee may only be granted Paid Parental Leave once in a rolling twelve-month period.
Any unused Paid Parental Leave shall be forfeited after eight weeks following the birth, adoption, or foster care placement. Unused Parental Leave is not available for payment upon separation.
The College will maintain all applicable benefits for employees during the paid parental leave period as if they were taking other paid leave. However, vacation will not accrue during Paid Parental Leave.
If the employee is eligible for Family Medical Leave under District Board of Trustee Policy “Family Medical Leave” 6Hx-18-5.131, Paid Parental Leave and Family Medical Leave shall be concurrent.
Employees may not engage in employment activities while on paid parental leave.
The employee must provide notice to their supervisor at least sixty days prior to the proposed date of the leave (or as soon as possible if the leave was not foreseeable). The employee must complete a request in the system and provide documentation to substantiate the request.
